My name is Kevin G. Smith — Christian, husband to Ashley, and father of a growing family — and I bring over fifteen years of combined pastoral and educational experience, with graduate-level training in theological studies, to my work tutoring young men.

A Pacific Northwesterner currently in southern Oregon, I came to saving faith in high school and have spent my life since equipping God's people for God's work. My passion is teaching young men not just what to think, but how to think — to articulate their ideas well, ask good questions, and display God's goodness, truth, and beauty in everything they do.

Purpose for Integrated Courses

When asked by the scribes and Pharisees which is the greatest commandment, Jesus responded by saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37) These courses use this framework to move through several books of the Bible and texts within Western Civilization, challenging the young men to consider how to grow in their love for the Lord with their whole being.

Weaving a tapestry of History, Bible, Philosophy, Theology, and Literature, these courses aim to wrestle with themes and ideas to strengthen the believer and sharpen his ability to think critically and articulate truth. To do this, each course works with a small number of texts from each discipline with open-ended questions to guide their reading. The live meetings are used for Socratic discussion, providing opportunities for the young men to be iron sharpening iron (Prov. 27:17).

The weekly rhythm includes readings accompanied by questions, live class meetings, and writing prompts. Each semester will have one research project (Seniors will have one year-long research project), one group in-class presentation, and regular smaller writing exercises.
